Bartleby, the character in a short story written by Herman Melville in 1853, is an enigma of passivity incarnate.
A masculine passivity?
The effect he has on those around him is the first reason to question what the gift of resistance can be. How is it that the refusal taken to the absurd extreme of a refusal to be – death – can enlighten us on the nature of desire? I will try to juxtapose his answer, not without irony, to the Oedipal mè funaï. And I will try to see if this eminently bureaucratic figure can help us understand something of the contemporary refusal of… gender identification.
This conference is organized within the framework of the activities of the Pôle Ouest of the EPFCL-France, of the Collective Seminar of Psychoanalysis „Résistance(s)” & of the International Laboratory of the Politics of Psychoanalysis of the FI and its School (LIPP).

Une passivité masculine ?
L’effet qu’il produit sur son entourage est la première raison d’interroger ce que peut être le don de résistance. Comment se fait-il que le refus porté à l’extrême absurde d’un refus d’être – la mort – puisse nous éclairer sur la nature du désir ? Je tenterai de juxtaposer sa réponse, non sans ironie, au mè funaï œdipien. Et j’essaierai de voir si cette figure éminemment bureaucratique peut nous aider à comprendre quelque chose au refus contemporain de… l’identification de genre.
